Election Monitoring Project

Election Monitoring is regarded to be as important as the elections itself. Since YLF/FES have been involved in all stages of the election process ranging from the voter registration education and analysis of electoral law to participation of women and youth in the elections, it was important for FES/YLF to make sure youth have the chance to get involved in Election Monitoring.

Through the network of youth YLF has all over Afghanistan, thanks to the two youth conferences in Kabul, YLF coordinated youth activities towards Election Monitoring. This engagement was coordinated with Free and Fair Elections Foundation of Afghanistan (FEFA).
FES trained one youth from each province in Afghanistan and then sent them back to their respective province to monitor the October 9, 2005 presidential election. The YLF was involved in the process by managing the activities of the monitors in three of the eight regions of the country and finally reported to FES Kabul office.

Apart from the questionnaires provided by FEFA, FES/YLF had provided youth monitors with separate questionnaires prepared by FES in which the focus was on youth participation and questions asking them about their views regarding the peace process, security situation, democracy and women participation in the presidential election. A total of 1500 questionnaires were distributed and each questionnaire comprised 15 questions.
